Breaker keeps tripping in Surrey?

If a circuit breaker repeatedly shuts off power, it can be a warning that something needs professional attention. Here's what to note and what to ask a qualified electrical contractor.

Valley Home Fix is a homeowner information and referral service, not an electrical contractor. We don't diagnose faults, perform repairs, or dispatch emergency electricians. Online request forms are currently inactive.

When tripping breakers are a safety concern

If you notice smoke, sparks, a burning smell, electrical shock, or unusual heat near an outlet or electrical panel, stay away from the affected equipment. For immediate danger, get to safety and call 911. Do not handle damaged wiring or panels.

Don't keep resetting a breaker that repeatedly trips. Don't remove electrical-panel covers, attempt wiring repairs, replace a breaker with a higher-rated one, or bypass protective devices. A qualified electrician can determine whether an appliance, circuit, wiring, or electrical component requires attention.

Why might a circuit breaker trip?

Breakers are designed to interrupt electricity under certain conditions. A trip can be associated with too much electrical load, a faulty connected device, or an issue in a circuit. Some breakers also provide specialized protection and may trip for other electrical fault conditions. A repeated trip is not enough information to identify the cause remotely.

Whether you live in a detached house, townhouse, condo, or strata-managed property may affect who is responsible for particular electrical components and who can authorize work.

What to tell an electrician in Surrey

  • Where power is affected: one room, several outlets, an appliance circuit, or a larger part of the home.
  • When it happens: during appliance use, at a particular time, or seemingly without a pattern.
  • Frequency: whether it happened once or repeatedly, without repeatedly testing or resetting it.
  • Warning signs: any sound, odour, heat, smoke, or other possible safety issue.
  • Property details: house, townhouse, apartment, or strata unit, and the area of Surrey where service is needed.

Surrey includes neighbourhoods such as Guildford, Fleetwood, Newton, Cloverdale, South Surrey, and Whalley/City Centre. Confirm a company serves your specific address rather than assuming it covers every neighbourhood.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Does your company hold the appropriate licence for electrical contracting work in British Columbia?
  • Is there an inspection or diagnostic fee, and how is it billed?
  • Could permits or an inspection be required for the proposed work?
  • Will you explain the problem and provide a written estimate before doing additional work?
  • If this is a strata property, which work requires property-manager approval?

To check contractor licensing, use Technical Safety BC's contractor lookup. Confirm licensing and permit requirements with the contractor and relevant authority for the specific job.

What does a breaker repair cost?

There isn't one reliable flat price for a breaker that keeps tripping. A company may charge to assess the fault before it can quote repair work. Costs can vary with access, the issue identified, required parts, permit requirements and labour. Ask whether the diagnostic fee is included in the final repair price, and whether taxes and materials are extra.

Common questions

Should I keep switching the breaker back on?

No. A repeatedly tripping breaker needs proper assessment; repeated resetting without understanding why it trips may be unsafe.

Is it necessarily the breaker itself?

No. The symptom alone doesn't establish whether the breaker, wiring, an appliance, or another component is responsible.

Can Valley Home Fix send an electrician immediately?

No. We don't offer emergency dispatch or guarantee a participating contractor is available. For a dangerous situation, seek emergency assistance instead of relying on a website enquiry.
